Moving a SORN vehicle on trade plates

Dealers Google SORN and trade plates as if they were the same problem as no MOT. They are not. SORN is a tax and off-road declaration. An MOT is whether the vehicle is legal to drive as a tested car or van. OVM will not treat a SORN marker as a reason to hide the job. We also will not treat it as a free pass.

What SORN is doing on the booking

Tell the office the vehicle is on SORN when you ask. Put it in the notes. Do not wait until the driver is in the yard.

This page is not legal advice. It is how we book a driven job when the VRM is showing SORN. The MOT rule, which still applies, is on can you move a car without an MOT on trade plates.

A SORN vehicle is declared off the road and untaxed. Motor traders still need to move stock that has been standing, taken in as a part-exchange, or bought for prep. That is a real booking problem. It is also how people try to slide an unroadworthy car onto plates because "it's only going to workshop".

OVM drives roadworthy cars and vans on trade plates. Valid MOT. It has to be drivable. Keys at collection. Enough fuel or charge for the first leg. The plates are ours. You do not lend us yours.

Tax status belongs on the booking because the office has to know what it is dispatching. "Taxed as required" on our other pages means we will not take a job that is not legal for the public highway. SORN is one of the facts that decides that conversation. Send the registration. We will tell you if it is a driven job or a truck.

We will not write DVLA guidance here as if we were the agency. If you need the statutory position, read it from them. If you need the vehicle moved, call us with the truth.

Valid MOT still required

SORN does not replace a test. No MOT, no driven movement.

What still blocks the job

No valid MOT. Will not start. Will not steer. Salvage. Unfinished repair you would not put a customer in. No keys. Nobody at collection. Auction release not confirmed.

SORN plus no MOT is not a special combo we wave through because the buyer is in a hurry. It is two problems. The MOT one is fatal for plates.

A short run to your own workshop is still a public road. Distance does not mint an MOT. If it cannot legally be driven, use a transporter. That choice is on trade plate delivery versus a transporter.

Auction stock on SORN is the same filter. Compound first, legality second, dispatch third. Auction collection after release, not before. Storage keeps running while you argue with the VRM.

No MOT is still no

SORN plus no MOT is two problems. The MOT one is fatal for plates.

Non-runners stay off plates

Will not start, will not steer, salvage, unfinished repair: that is a loaded job.

How to book it so we are not guessing

Registration. Both postcodes. Date. In the notes: on SORN, valid MOT or not, where it has been standing, whether it starts. Named contacts.

If it has been off the road, say how long you know about. Batteries go flat. Tyres go down. A "it drove in October" note is not a condition record. The driver still photographs it before the wheels turn as transport. If it is not as described, they stop and the office calls you.

The product remains a driven vehicle movement. Coverage is Nationwide from Glasgow, on coverage. You do not bring the car to the office to "make it easier".

Part-ex on SORN sitting at a customer's house is a contact problem as much as a tax problem. Someone has to be there with the keys. Unmanned "it's on the drive, SORN, grab it" is how collections fail.

In practice

SORN is a fact on the booking, not a workaround

Tell the office the VRM is on SORN. Valid MOT and drivable still have to be true before a driver is sent.

Questions

Common questions

Prefer to speak to someone? Call the team.

If it is on SORN, do I still need a valid MOT for OVM to drive it?

Yes. SORN does not replace a test. OVM only drives cars and vans that are legal to be on the road: valid MOT and drivable. If the MOT is out, it is a transporter.

Can you take it to the test centre on plates without an MOT?

Not as a workaround we advertise. If the vehicle is not legal to drive, we will not take the booking to be helpful. Call the office with the registration rather than assuming a test-run exemption applies to your job.

Does SORN change the price?

It changes whether we can take it and it belongs in the notes so the quote matches the vehicle. There is no SORN tariff on this page. There is no rate card at all. Send the registration.

What about a SORN van?

Same rule as a SORN car. Legal to drive, quoted as a van, height and fuel in the figure. Van booking shape is on van trade plate delivery UK. The eligibility post is can you move a van on trade plates.

Should I tax it before you collect?

Tell the office what the VRM currently shows. Do not tax it as a surprise on the morning of collection and change the job without saying. We quote what you send us. If the status will change, say when.

If it has a valid MOT, we can quote it

Tell the office it is on SORN. Registration and both postcodes on the form.
