Trade plate delivery for electric cars and vans

An electric car or van still has to be driven. OVM moves a roadworthy EV on trade plates the same way we move a petrol car: one driver, door to door, valid MOT, photographs at both ends, digital proof when the job closes. Charge is planned into the route. Cables and charge cards travel with the vehicle and are logged. We are not a transporter with a locked deck and a hope that the battery survives the trip.

Plates do not change the MOT rule

The product page is trade plate EV transport. This post is when plates are the right tool for dealer, auction and fleet EVs and when they are not.

Trade plates do not replace a valid MOT. An EV going to a workshop, a charging bay or a prep team "to be tested at the other end" is still not legal to drive today if the MOT is missing or expired. If it cannot legally be driven, book a transporter. We will say so.

That includes auction EVs. A released lot at BCA, Manheim or Wilsons that will not stand a legal drive is not an OVM collection. Starting in the compound is not the same as roadworthy. The MOT rule for any fuel type is on can you move a car without an MOT on trade plates.

Valid MOT

Workshop, prep or a charging bay at the far end does not make an illegal drive legal.

Charge is a planning fact

If the indicated range will not cover the next legal charging point, the driver should not leave.

Charge is a planning fact, not a slogan

A driven EV fails in a different way from a driven petrol car. It does not run out of "a bit of diesel in a can". If the indicated range will not cover the next legal charging point with a sensible margin, the driver should not leave.

Tell the office the state of charge you believe is in the vehicle and whether a cable and a charge card are with the keys. We agree what "enough" looks like for that journey before anyone is dispatched and we plan a charging stop where the route needs one. We do not publish a percentage here, because two registrations on the same corridor are not the same battery, weather or traffic.

If the driver arrives at an auction or a dealer compound and the vehicle is too low to move legally and safely, they stop and the office calls you. We do not load it onto a truck. That is a different product.

Energy used on the job is charged separately, in the same way fuel is charged separately on a petrol or diesel movement. There is no rate card on this page.

Cables, cards and the condition record

Granny leads, Type 2 cables, adapters and charge cards are part of the vehicle as stock. They get logged at collection with the photographs and checked off at delivery. A missing cable on a dealer to dealer EV is the same class of dispute as a missing second key on a petrol car. The digital proof is how you close it.

Mileage still matters. So do panels. An EV can pick up the same yard rash as anything else sitting in a compound. Proof of collection at pickup, proof of delivery at handover, digital proof when the job closes. That close is standard on every OVM job, electric or not.

Dealer stock, auction lots, fleet EVs

Dealer groups moving an EV from prep to a satellite, or from a Scottish roof to an English one, book it as a dealer to dealer vehicle movement. Say it is electric in the notes so charge and cables are on the job, not assumed.

Auction buyers collect an EV only after release, same as any other lot. The compound does not care that it is quiet. It cares that the release matches and the vehicle can leave. Start from auction collection after release and put the house and site on the quote.

Fleet and lease EVs are still one unit at a time. A block of de-fleet electrics going the same way on a flexible date may belong on a transporter. A single contract-hire return that has to move this week belongs on plates, if it is legal to drive.

Nationwide means England, Scotland and Wales. Charging along that route is planned. Northern Ireland is outside the service.

How to quote an EV

Use the instant quote widget on this page. Registration, both postcodes, date, name, company, phone, email. In the notes: it is an EV or PHEV, the charge you believe is in it, whether cables and a card are present and whether collection is a dealer, a home or an auction compound.

No account is needed to ask. Most quotes come back within the hour during working hours. If the vehicle is not as described when the driver arrives, they stop.

Call 0141 459 1302. Email [email protected]. The office is in Glasgow. The drive is the two postcodes.

A roadworthy electric car ready for a driven trade plate movement

In practice

Charge planned, MOT still required

Cables and charge cards travel with the vehicle and are logged. Plates do not replace an MOT and they do not invent range.

Questions

Common questions

Prefer to speak to someone? Call the team.

Is a plug-in hybrid booked the same way as a battery EV?

Yes, as a driven trade plate job, if it is roadworthy with a valid MOT. Tell the office it is a PHEV so they know there is a tank and a lead. Charge and fuel are both planning facts. Do not assume the driver can complete the route on an empty battery and an empty tank.

What if an auction EV shows almost no range when we win it?

Do not dispatch a trade plate driver on a hope. Confirm release, then tell the office the indicated range and whether a cable is with the lot. If it cannot legally and safely make the first charging point, it is not this product. A transporter is the right call.

Who authorises a charging stop on a long Nationwide job?

The office, when the job is planned. The driver does not invent a detour at the roadside and argue about it later. If the route needs a stop, it is on the movement before anyone leaves. Energy used is charged separately.

Can you move an EV with no MOT if it is only going onto charge at our workshop?

No. Workshop, prep or charging bay at the far end does not make an illegal drive legal. Valid MOT and drivable, or use a transporter.

Do cables have to be in the car, or can the receiving site supply them?

They should travel with the vehicle unless you have agreed otherwise in writing on the booking. What is present at collection is what gets logged. A receiving manager who expected a Type 2 lead that never left the sending site is how jobs bounce.
