# When a trade plate driver beats a transporter. When it does not

Trade plate delivery beats a transporter when the car or van is roadworthy with a valid MOT and needs to leave now rather than wait for a deck. A transporter is a loaded truck. Use a truck when it cannot be driven or several units travel as one load. Quote here or call 0141 459 1302.

## Side by side

A trade plate driver takes one roadworthy car or van on plates while a transporter is a loaded truck. Use the instant quote when the vehicle can legally be driven. Send the registration and both postcodes. If a transporter is the better call, we will say so rather than take the booking. The office number is 0141 459 1302.

Cost shape is described, not priced. No rate card. No invented pound figure.

What OVM does

### Trade plate delivery (OVM)

**Unit of move:** One driver, one roadworthy car or van, address to address.

**MOT / roadworthy:** Valid MOT where required, taxed as required, legal to drive.

**Speed:** No minimum load. Same-day and next-day collection are normal.

**Cost shape:** Priced per driven job: route, vehicle, wait or release, urgency. Fuel charged separately.

**Proof:** One person end to end. Every panel at both ends, mileage, signature, digital proof when the job closes.

**When it fails:** Not legal to drive. Height or weight a driver cannot take. No keys, contact or release. Northern Ireland.

The alternative

### Transporter

**Unit of move:** A loaded truck. One slot on a deck, often several vehicles.

**MOT / roadworthy:** Can take a non-runner, salvage, no MOT or stock not released for a driven exit.

**Speed:** Planned routes. A single car can sit for days waiting for a slot.

**Cost shape:** Truck cost spread across a full deck. Usually cheaper per vehicle on five or more, same way, flexible timing.

**Proof:** Brief loading notes on a manifest. More than one pair of hands.

**When it fails:** Urgency on one unit. Auction storage while the deck fills. Retail handover that needs a walk-round.

 vs

## Use trade plates when

Use trade plates when one roadworthy car or van can legally be driven and has to leave without waiting for a deck.

A single unit, or a handful that do not need to travel as one load. One car or van is the usual OVM booking. Several roadworthy vehicles can still move on plates. That means more drivers, not a wait for a truck to fill.

Valid MOT. It can be driven. Trade plates do not make an unroadworthy vehicle legal. If it will not start, will not steer or has no MOT, or if you would not trust the brakes, that is a transporter job.

Dealer, auction or fleet work. Site to site, auction compound to forecourt once [release is confirmed](https://ovmtransport.com/auction-collection), fleet transfer, retail handover. [What a driven movement actually is](https://ovmtransport.com/vehicle-movements) is the product page. [When trade plate delivery is the right move](https://ovmtransport.com/trade-plate-vehicle-delivery) is the shorter product page.

You need proof of collection and proof of delivery, not a loading note. Every panel, mileage, condition notes and a signature, against that registration, emailed at handover. That is the record a retail customer, a lease return or a de-fleet argument is decided on.

You will not wait for a full load. A transporter needs enough vehicles going the same way to justify running the truck. A driver does not. If the car has to leave tomorrow morning, plates are the tool that can actually do that.

## Use a transporter when

Use a transporter when the vehicle cannot legally be driven, or when several units travel as one load. OVM will tell you this rather than pretend otherwise.

Non-runner. Will not start, will not move under its own power, needs a winch or a push.

Salvage, a category write-off or an unfinished repair. Stock a compound will not release for a driven exit belongs on a deck. We will not send a driver to fail at the gate.

No valid MOT. No MOT, no driven movement. The same if it is untaxed when tax is required, or not legal for the public highway.

Multiple units the same way, flexible timing. For five or more on one route, a transporter is usually cheaper per vehicle because the truck is shared. If one of them is needed tomorrow, or any one of them is going to a customer's door, that unit is not a transporter job.

Height or weight a driver cannot take. If it cannot legally be driven, or a driven exit is not legal, it needs a loaded move. A high-roof van that is legal to drive can still go on plates. We quote the route it can actually take. Send the registration if you are unsure.

## Auction: storage versus waiting for a truck

Auction storage keeps running until the vehicle leaves. Waiting for a truck to fill a deck does not pause that clock. Buying the car is not the same as being allowed to take it. The site issues a release code or buyer reference.

For a single released, roadworthy car, a driver can go once the paperwork is actually confirmed. That is usually the cheaper total, because you pay for a movement rather than another day of compound storage while a truck waits for a viable load. [Auction collection after release](https://ovmtransport.com/auction-collection) is how OVM runs that job. We do not dispatch on a hope.

For stock that cannot legally be driven out , there is no decision. It is a transporter. A driven attempt the gate will refuse costs you the wasted journey and the storage that kept running.

For several lots going the same way , add the storage. If the truck can collect them together before charges bite, the deck can still win. If extra days in the compound cost more than you save by waiting, use plates on the roadworthy units and a transporter for the rest. OVM will take the driven part and refuse the rest.

We confirm the release with the compound before a driver is sent. If the code has not come through, we hold the booking.

## What OVM refuses

OVM refuses salvage, non-runners and anything that cannot legally be driven. We will not pretend to be a transporter, a low-loader or a recovery operator.

If the vehicle on site is not as described, the driver calls the office before the wheels turn.

- Non-runners, salvage, category write-offs and unfinished repairs that cannot legally be driven.
- No valid MOT where one is required, untaxed when tax is required or not legal for the road.
- Any vehicle our driver judges unsafe. Driving it would invalidate the cover the movement depends on.
- Northern Ireland.
- Dispatch before release is confirmed with the site.
- A booking presented as a different vehicle, address or a retail handover we were not quoted for. We requote first.
- Height or weight that cannot legally be taken as a driven movement.
- Being asked to 'just put it on a truck'. If a transporter is the right tool, we will say so and stop.

## Proof: one person, both ends

A driven movement produces a condition record because one person has the vehicle from collection to handover. Every panel is photographed before the engine starts, the mileage is recorded, keys and documents are checked and a signature is captured at the far end. You get digital proof of collection and delivery. Mileage added is recorded against that registration, not glossed over.

A transported vehicle is typically loaded with a brief note and more than one pair of hands. Fine for bulk stock. A poor record for a retail handover, a lease return or a de-fleet dispute.

Insurance on an OVM job is our motor trade policy. It gives full road risk cover while the vehicle is driven under our trade plates. That cover is for the driven product, not a reason to put an unroadworthy car on plates.

## How the quote helps you choose

The quote is how you choose plates or a truck for that registration. Send the registration, both postcodes, roughly when it needs to move and whether every vehicle is roadworthy. Named contacts at both ends stop a wasted journey. The Instant Quote shows the price on screen.

[What actually sets a trade plate delivery price](https://ovmtransport.com/trade-plate-delivery-cost-uk) is the driven route, the vehicle, wait or release and same-day versus planned. There is no rate card. Fuel is charged separately. A vehicle that is not roadworthy cannot be quoted as a driven job.

Integrators can read services, coverage and quote fields from the [OVM API documentation](https://ovmtransport.com/docs/api). That API is discovery, not a booking API.

 Instant Quote0141 459 1302

If one vehicle in a batch cannot be driven, can OVM take the rest?

Yes, the roadworthy units, once we know which is which. Salvage, non-runners and anything without a valid MOT stay off plates. Split the job.

Does OVM operate a transporter if I ask?

No. If a transporter is the right tool we will say so and stop. We will not book a truck for you. The quote and 0141 459 1302 are for driven work.

Is waiting for a transporter cheaper once the car is in an auction compound?

Often not, for a single roadworthy unit. Storage keeps running until it leaves. Add the days on the compound before you decide the truck is cheaper. For five or more on a flexible date, or anything that cannot be driven out, the transporter still wins.

Can a category write-off go on trade plates if it starts?

Not with OVM. Starting is not the same as being legal to drive out of the compound on plates.

Does a high-roof van or a motorhome always need a transporter?

No, if it is legal to drive with a valid MOT. We quote the route it can actually take. If height or weight makes a driven journey not legal, it needs a transporter. Send the registration rather than guessing.

What if the driver arrives and it is not roadworthy?

They do not take it. They call the office. If we cannot collect for reasons outside our control, the full fee may apply. Tell us the truth before we dispatch.

Does OVM cover Northern Ireland on either method?

No. Northern Ireland is outside the service.

Do I get the same proof on a transporter?

Usually only brief loading notes. On an OVM driven job you get photographs of every panel at both ends, the mileage, condition notes and a signature, when the job closes.

How do I tell you which method I need?

Say what is moving, whether it has a valid MOT, whether it starts and steers, how many units and by when. If it needs a truck, do not send the driven quote. If you are unsure, send both postcodes or call 0141 459 1302.

### What trade plate delivery costs and how the quote is built

OVM does not publish a rate card for trade plate delivery. The quote covers the driven job. It looks at distance on the actual route, the vehicle, wait or release at collection and whether it is same-day or planned. There are no made-up pound figures on this page. Two postcodes start it. ### How long trade plate delivery takes

A trade plate delivery is usually next working day nationwide once the car or van is ready and the release is done. Same day is possible on shorter runs if a driver can reach an open gate. Yes. Trade plate delivery with OVM is insured. We carry motor trade road risk while the vehicle is driven on our plates. Condition is photographed before it moves. You do not add our driver to your own policy. Instant quote on this page or call 0141 459 1302.

### What paperwork is needed for trade plate delivery

Less than people expect. The trade plates, the insurance and the condition reporting are ours to deal with. What we need from you is the authority to take the vehicle and someone who knows we are coming.
