Plates, not the movement

# How long do trade plates take to arrive?

How long DVLA trade plates take to arrive is not how long a trade plate delivery takes. The first is the plates themselves turning up for a trader. The second is a driver moving a roadworthy car or van. OVM does the driven movement once the vehicle is legal to drive.

## Two different questions

People type “how long do trade plates take to arrive” when they are waiting on a set of plates from DVLA, or from whoever issues them for that trader. That is paperwork and a physical plate turning up. It is not a car moving.

A trade plate delivery is the movement. A driver collects a roadworthy car or van, drives it on plates OVM already carries and hands it over. How long that takes is a different page.

### Plates arriving

The trader's own plates, issued for that business. Timing sits with the issuing office, not with OVM.

### The movement

A driver, OVM plates, a legal car or van. That clock starts when the vehicle can actually be driven.

[How long trade plate delivery takes](https://ovmtransport.com/how-long-does-trade-plate-delivery-take)[What is trade plate delivery?](https://ovmtransport.com/blog/what-is-trade-plate-delivery)

## We will not invent a DVLA timescale

How long plates take to arrive depends on the issuing office and on the trader's own application. Some traders already hold plates. Some are waiting on a first issue or a replacement. OVM is not DVLA. We will not publish a number we cannot stand behind.

If you are waiting on plates for your own use, ask the office that is issuing them. That is the honest answer. Guessing a number here would be a lie.

## What OVM actually does

OVM already has trade plates. You do not wait for us to be issued a set before a job can run. You wait for the vehicle to be legal to drive: valid MOT, drivable, ready for the road. Then a driver collects it and delivers it, with digital proof of collection and proof of delivery.

If the car cannot legally be driven, plates will not save it. A transporter is the right tool. We will say so.

In practice

## Our plates are already on the job

You are not waiting for OVM to be posted a set. You are waiting for the vehicle to be legal to drive. Then we move it.

How it runs

## What actually happens

Four steps. Most of them are ours rather than yours.

- 01

### Work out which question you have

Plates arriving for a trader, or a car that needs driving. They are not the same wait.
- 02

### If it is the plates themselves

Ask the issuing office. We will not invent their timescale.
- 03

### If the vehicle is legal to drive

Send the registration and both postcodes. That is the movement.
- 04

### We collect and deliver

OVM plates, photographs, mileage, signature. Digital proof when the job closes.

How long do trade plates take to arrive?

If you mean DVLA plates turning up for a trader, it depends on the issuing office and on that trader's own plates. OVM does not issue them and will not invent a processing time. If you mean how long a trade plate delivery takes, that is a different page: a driver moving a roadworthy car or van.

Is this the same as how long trade plate delivery takes?

No. Plate arrival is the plates themselves. Trade plate delivery is the driven movement. OVM does the movement once the vehicle is legal to drive.

Do I wait for OVM to receive plates before you can collect?

No. OVM already carries trade plates. The vehicle still needs a valid MOT and has to be drivable. If it is not, we will say a transporter is the right call.

Who do I ask if I am waiting on my own plates?

The office that is issuing them. That is not OVM. For a movement of a roadworthy car or van, use the quote form on this page or call 0141 459 1302. OVM Ltd, 48 West George Street, Glasgow, G2 1BP.

### What to confirm before you book a trade plate driver

Dealers already have posts on failed collections, part-ex, one registration and release codes. Controllers still send half a job and then ring at noon asking where the car is. This is the checklist the office runs before a driver leaves. Bookmark it. Hand it to whoever books. Instant quote on this page or call 0141 459 1302.

### Name the collector before the driver sits in the lane

The compound will not release a lot to a stranger at the barrier. Buying it is not naming who is collecting. OVM has to be the named collector, with identification and plates, before a driver is sent. If you name nobody, the driver waits in the lane and storage keeps running. ### A wasted journey is usually paperwork, not the drive

A wasted journey is usually paperwork, not the drive. Four things fail a collection: no release, no keys, no valid MOT, or the window is shut. OVM will not pretend a driver can magic those. A wasted collection can still attract the fee. Confirm it before we dispatch. Instant quote on this page or call 0141 459 1302.

### Collecting a part-ex from a customer's drive

A part-ex collection is the car still on a customer's drive. Not a compound. Not a dealer roof. Not a sold car going to a buyer. There has to be a named contact who actually has the keys. The car still has to be legal to drive. If they are out, or the V5 is in a kitchen drawer, the job fails. Instant quote on this page or call 0141 459 1302.
